Interview: Indidginus (Sofa Surfer) serving up steaming didgeridoo rhythms
Indidginus - “Mash it up bad bwoy. Dub Step, Dub, Dancehall, World-fusion, Electronica and dance served up on a bed of steaming riddims seasoned with slide didgeridoo for additional flava.”
Dubstep has had a steady rise in mainstream enjoyment over the last two years in the EDM scene and other pop genres – resulting in the genre growing in diversity of sound extension and its global fan base.
Michael Martin also known as ‘Indidginus’ has been behind electronic music production since 1996 bringing us World-Fusion Electronica and Dance as well as twists of Dub and Dancehall.
That and his didgeridoo skills have made his style hit out of many other Dubstep producers. The results are undeniably superb, drawing influences from everything from and between the likes of ‘Kool and the Gang’ to ‘Burial’.
If you are into Dubstep you will thank me for telling you about his upcoming album ‘SOFA SURFERS’ set for release July 2011. You can download and listen to a track he just finished up in the Red Bull Music Studios titled ‘Hold your Vision’.

What was the creative vision behind the album titled ‘Sofa Surfer’?
In just one word – “riddim”; but in a few more words – I was in the UK last year to gig and whilst I was there, I thought it would be a good idea to start an album & to involve my musical friends living there in the project.
I didn’t really have a specific vision at first of a particular genre. My first collaboration was with Colin Angus from The Shamen. Whilst I was surfing his sofa in London he gave me a copy of a CD that his friend and ex-manager had given him to listen to. Turned out that the CD was full of top-notch Dubstep, and it gelled with me a lot. I then realized how popular Dubstep was and that sealed it for me. And so began my album journey into Dubstep and ting.
What can Dubstep fanatics expect from this latest offering ?
“My unique take on groovy Dubstep, Dub and Dancehall featuring a bunch of world-class musicians and producers both from Cape Town & the UK – EJ Von Lyrik, Steve Newman, Fletcher, Teba, Riccardo Moretti & Francesca Krnjak (LegoLoop), Colin Angus, High Frequency Bandwidth, Seb Taylor (Kaya Project), Tripswitch, Suns of Arqa, Raggasouljah, 7Ft Soundsystem, Tully McCullagh and OOOD . Something for all the family.”

His music is well received globally, which country does he feel most appreciated and celebrated?
“The honest answer is that I have found more support from blogs, magazines, radio shows and the like abroad. I’m not exactly sure why, but that’s how it is. Maybe it’s simply a numbers game in that there are more blogs, magazines, radio shows etc overseas than there are here.
I have also found equal support from artists both here and abroad as the album bears testament to which I’m very happy about. It’s always a great feeling to connect and to write sweet ‘riddims’ together. I feel appreciated throughout the world too.”
The album launch takes place at Rubadub Night 9th July at The Mercury Lounge in Cape Town. For more info on the event check out Rubadub.co.za
What was one of his most memorable gigs and what happened?
“One of the most memorable gigs I played was in Reading of all places. I used to play a didgeridoo as part of a drum and bass live PA called “Impact”. We played support to Fabio & Grooverider one night and got on Radio One. Big up the massive. I also headlined at a didgeridoo festival in the UK last year(yes, they have a didgeridoo festival there!), which was a laugh. Talk about hippies in a field and first time I’ve ever headlined anything.”
Your perfect world of happiness?
“There is no perfect world, with no perfect happiness, so it’s a moot point. Alternatively, maybe everything is perfect just as it is. Regardless, I love music and I feel very happy following that path! I’m also very happy in my relationship. So I feel like I’m doing pretty well on ticking the happiness boxes. Throw in a world tour and a few million dollars into the mix and I’ll be ecstatic!”
Mr. ill Gates wrote him recently to let him know he is a fan of his album and Indidginus may be touring with him in September this year. He is filling up a booking roster in the USA so he’ll be gigging regulalrly over there too. Also keep your ears peeled and tuned for the release of a track lined up with James Matthes, organizer of the the legendary Rubadub Nights at Mercury.
